Spatial Bookmarks & Placemarks

Go beyond basic ATAK markers with advanced spatial bookmarking. Rich metadata, file attachments, custom mil-std symbols, category organization, collaborative sharing, and DuckDB-powered search — a complete field intelligence annotation system.

Beyond Basic Markers

Standard ATAK markers are limited to a position, callsign, and type. Tactical AI DuckDB's Spatial Bookmarks transform markers into rich intelligence objects — with full metadata records, file attachments, custom symbols, category hierarchies, and powerful search — all stored in GeoPackage and queryable through DuckDB Spatial.

📌 Rich Location Intelligence

An intelligence analyst marks a building of interest with a bookmark containing address, observed activity logs, linked photos, associated entity reports, risk assessment score, and attachment to a PDF document scan. The bookmark persists across sessions, is searchable by any attribute, and can be exported to share with the broader intelligence community.

Bookmark Metadata Fields

Each spatial bookmark can carry a comprehensive set of structured metadata fields in addition to its geographic position:

Field Type Examples Use Case
Name / Callsign Grid square, structure name, callsign Quick identification
Category / Tags Enemy, Friendly, Infrastructure, Medical Filtering and grouping
Description Multi-line observations, situation notes Free-text intelligence notes
Confidence Level Confirmed, Probable, Suspected, Possible Intelligence grading
Threat Level High, Medium, Low, Unknown Prioritization
Source Observer callsign, sensor ID, report reference Provenance tracking
Timestamp Observation time (ZULU), expiry time Temporal relevance
Custom Fields Any key-value pairs Mission-specific metadata

File Attachments

Attach any file type to a spatial bookmark — photos, videos, documents, audio recordings, or sensor data exports. Attachments are stored within the GeoPackage file alongside the bookmark geometry and metadata, keeping everything in one portable file.

Supported Attachment Types

Custom Symbol Library

Tactical AI DuckDB extends ATAK's default symbol set with a comprehensive custom symbol library. Symbols follow MIL-STD-2525D specification for military symbology while also supporting custom organizational icon sets.

Symbol Category Count Standard
Military Units & Equipment 500+ MIL-STD-2525D
Infrastructure 200+ Custom / FEMA / NWS
Emergency Management 150+ ICS symbols
POI & Navigation 300+ OSM / OpenLayers
Custom / Organizational Unlimited Import PNG/SVG

Category Hierarchy & Collections

Organize bookmarks into hierarchical category trees. Collections group related bookmarks for specific operations, missions, or geographic areas. Collections can be exported as GeoPackage files and shared with other team members or imported into ArcGIS.

📁 Operational Collection Management

Create a collection for each mission phase. "Phase 1 - Reconnaissance" contains observation posts and route waypoints. "Phase 2 - Consolidation" contains logistics nodes and medical posts. Share each collection selectively with the units responsible for each phase, keeping the map uncluttered and operationally relevant.

DuckDB-Powered Search

All bookmark metadata is indexed in DuckDB Spatial, enabling powerful full-text and spatial searches that are impossible with standard ATAK markers:

Search Capabilities

Collaborative Sharing

Bookmark collections are designed for team sharing. Export collections as self-contained GeoPackage files for distribution via TAK server, Rclone cloud sync, or direct file transfer in disconnected environments.

Sharing Method Connectivity Required Use Case
TAK Server Sync Network (CoT/HTTPS) Real-time team sharing
Rclone Cloud Sync Internet (S3/Azure/GCS) Enterprise backup & sharing
GeoPackage Export None (file transfer) DDIL environments
KML Export None ArcGIS / Google Earth import
OGC API Features Local network Web map integration

AI-Enhanced Bookmark Analysis

The AI Agent can analyze bookmark collections, identify patterns, and generate intelligence summaries. Ask the agent to summarize all observations from a specific time window, identify spatial clusters of activity, or generate a formatted SALUTE report from your bookmark data.
